Is Triathlon the sport for you?

A “triathlon” is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances and can be an individual or team event.

It is said to have started as a French race during the 1920s–1930s that was called “Les trois sports”, “La Course des Débrouillards”, and “La course des Touche à Tout.” This race is usually held every year in France near Joinville-le-Pont, in Meulan and Poissy.

Introduced in 1970s by San Diego Track Club and designed to be an alternative to hard track training. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone sponsored an event in 1974 comprising a 10km run, 8km cycle, and 500m swim. The sport was awarded Olympic status in 1989 and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. 1989 also saw the creation of International Triathlon Union (ITU) and the official distance for the triathlon was set at a 1500m swim, a 40km cycle, and a 10km run.

Triathlon races are known as Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic (Standard), Half Iron and Iron Distance.
