Lighten Your Load: 3 Reasons to Choose Lightweight Meals While Camping

As a fan of long distance hiking and wild camping, I know that the weight of your backpack can make all the difference in your journey. That's why I highly recommend using lightweight meals, such as dehydrated and freeze dried options, when planning for extended hikes in the UK.

Not only do these meals weigh significantly less than traditional canned or fresh food options, they also offer a range of other benefits that make them an excellent choice for backpacking.

1 Convenience
One of the main advantages of using lightweight meals is their convenience. These meals require minimal preparation and can be quickly rehydrated using boiling water. This means that you can spend more time on the trail, enjoying the stunning landscapes and less time cooking and cleaning up. With a variety of options available, including vegetarianvegan, gluten free and lactose/ dairy free meals, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
2 Nutritionally Complete
But convenience isn't the only benefit of lightweight meals. They're also packed with nutrients and energy, making them ideal for replenishing your body after a long day of hiking. Many dehydrated and freeze dried meals are specifically designed for outdoor enthusiasts and contain a balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to keep you fuelled and energized.
3 Long Shelf Life
Another major advantage of lightweight meals is their long shelf life. Unlike fresh produce, which can spoil quickly in warm temperatures, dehydrated and freeze dried meals remain fresh for months or even years, making them ideal for extended trips or emergency situations.
Furthermore, lightweight meals are easy to pack and take up minimal space in your backpack. This means you can carry more supplies or gear without sacrificing weight. And since they often come in compact packaging, they're also easy to pack out and dispose of responsibly.
.
Overall, lightweight meals are a game changer for outdoor enthusiasts. They offer convenience, nutrition, and long shelf life, making them the perfect choice for backpackers, hikers, campers, and anyone who loves to explore the great outdoors.

I do like to cook fresh food when I’m on a wild camp but when weight is an issue then it’s dehydrated all the way. We are spoiled nowadays with the choice an quality of dehydrated meals, there are loads to choose from, some taste great and some not so great. If I had to choose a favourite, Summit To Eat chicken fried rice would be my choice.
