Fuel Your Hike with Firepot Foods: Hiking and Camping the Cumbrian Way

The Cumbrian Way is a 70-mile (112 km) long-distance trail that runs through the heart of the Lake District National Park, one of the most scenic and breath-taking areas in England. The trail starts in Ulverston, a small town in South Cumbria, and finishes in the city of Carlisle, located on the border with Scotland.

The Cumbrian Way trail is challenging, with steep ascents and descents, but it offers some of the most stunning views of the Lake District. You'll walk through rugged mountain landscapes, picturesque valleys, and ancient woodlands, and you'll encounter plenty of wildlife along the way.

.

The Cumbrian Way is a Wildlife Haven! Cumbria is renowned for its diverse and abundant wildlife, and the Cumbrian Way offers an excellent opportunity to encounter some of the region's fascinating creatures. As you traverse the trail, you may spot red deer, wild ponies, red squirrels, and a variety of bird species, including buzzards, ospreys, and golden eagles. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready for unforgettable wildlife sightings along your journey.

When it comes to planning a hiking and camping trip on the Cumbrian Way, one of the most important things to consider is food. You'll need lightweight, nutritious, and easy-to-prepare meals that will give you the energy you need to tackle the trail. That's where Firepot Foods comes in.

.
One great meal suggestion for the Cumbrian Way is Firepot Foods' Dal and Rice. When we interviewed John, the founder of Firepot Food, back in September 2020, he told us that the Dal and Rice was his "Go To" comfort meal -
"I spent a year working up near Everest in 2016 where Dal Baht makes up a large proportion of your weekly diet in the mountains. It’s the signature dish of Nepal. Recipes which have evolved high-up in extreme regions are always a good bet when you are looking for a comfort meal." - John
Five kinds of lentils, simmered with onion, garlic, cumin and chilli. Combined with basmati rice, spinach and garam masala, finished with chopped coriander and a squeeze of lemon juice and it's packed with protein and fibre to keep you feeling full and energized on the trail. This dish is Gluten Free and Lactose Free. To prepare, simply add hot water and wait for a few minutes - no cooking required!
.
The Cumbrian Way is also packed with historical significance: The Cumbrian Way follows ancient trade routes and paths that have been used for centuries. The trail passes through numerous historic sites, allowing hikers to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of the region. Along the way, you'll come across remnants of old Roman roads, medieval castles, traditional stone bridges, and charming market towns that bear witness to Cumbria's fascinating past.
.
Another great meal option for The Cumbrian Way is the Firepot Foods' Chilli Con Carne. This classic Mexican dish is made with slow-cooked British beef with fruity ancho and smoky chipotle chillies, red peppers and kidney beans in a warmly-spiced tomato sauce and long grain rice, making it a hearty and satisfying meal after a long day on the trail. Just like the Dal and Rice, it's easy to prepare - simply add hot water and wait for a few minutes. There is also a Vegan option of Chilli NON Carne which is also gluten free and lactose free
.
In addition to providing delicious and nutritious meals, Firepot Foods also cares about the environment. Their packaging is compostable and made from renewable resources, so you can feel good about minimizing your impact on the planet while enjoying your meals on the trail.
"Our compostable eco packaging is designed as an alternative to our main range of yellow plastic pouches, while still featuring the same nutritious, delicious outdoor meal options.

These compostable bags are made from bio-based sources, including sugar cane, which means they are fully compostable and should disintegrate within a year in compost — faster if the levels of warmth, moisture and air exposure are right." - Firepot - read full blog here
